Tutorial: Make a DIY Folded Paper Photo Ornament (With Free Template)

Make a cute DIY paper photo ornament with our free printable template (see below).  You will see this template has room for you to place three photos. This is a great way to make a personal keepsake ornament for a loved one. This patterned ornament is ready colored, so all you need to do is to print onto plain white heavyweight paper or light cardstock to create this ornament.

In addition to the ornament template, you will see I have included a template which you can use to cut photos to size to fit the ornament.

How to Make the Paper Photo Ornament

You will need:

  • Template (download below)
  • Cardstock or heavyweight paper
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Adhesive (I like glue sticks, however normal white glue or wood glue will work well too)
  • Metal ruler or straight edge
  • Bone folder (you will use this for scoring the paper or cardstock and this will help to give you crisp edges to your folds)

Instructions

1/ Download and print the template. Download the template here

Photo Ornament

2/ Cut out the shapes, using a craft knife or scissors.

3/ Score along the dotted fold lines using the bone folder and metal ruler. If you are not familiar with scoring, we do this to prepare the paper or cardstock for folding. This means using a bone folder (or blunt knife) and carefully drawing this down the side of the ruler along the fold line. This breaks the fibers in the paper and will make it much easier to fold a straight line

Start adhering the edges together.

Tip: I suggest attaching the photo to the ornament before starting to compile the model as it is easier to put pressure on the card to adhere the photo when the cardstock is flat. That’s not to say it’s impossible to do it afterwards, it’s just that a little extra care is required!

Tips for finishing your DIY paper ornament:

  • Think about how you want to display the ornament before you start. If you plan to hang the ornament from a  tree then try adding a piece of looped ribbon or cord into the top of the ornament when you are adhering the edges together.
  • If you want to make a bigger or smaller tree, simply adjust the size on your printer settings.
  • Add sparkle to your ornament with some glitter or glitter glue!

Tutorial: Color Your Templates Before Printing

Do you want to create colored paper projects without having to print on colored paper or cardstock? In that case, here’s a neat trick for using the free Microsoft Paint program to digitally your templates before printing. This is useful in projects like our Make a Paper Christmas Tree project. If you don’t have green paper or cardstock available, simply color the tree green (or other color you like) and print onto white paper or cardstock.

If you are using a Windows PC, you probably have Microsoft Paint installed, if not, download it from the Microsoft store (it is free). If you are a Mac user, you won’t be able to use Paint, however if you leave a comment below, I’ll look for an alternative for you.

Instructions

Open Microsoft Paint, select ‘Open’ from the menu and browse for the file you want to color:

In this instance, I am going to color our white Christmas tree template. To do this, select ‘Brushes’ from the top menu bar, then click on the paint tin icon and select a color:

Just click anywhere in the shape you want to color, and you will see it gets filled with your selected color:

There are some other neat features you could use. For example, select ‘Sticker’ from the top menu:

You will see there are a range of stickers you can add. I’ve added a little star to the tree. Alternatively, I could have selected ‘2d shape’ and drawn a shape, such a circle to represent ornaments, on the tree:

When you are happy with how the template looks, save it before printing. Remember to select ‘save as’ so you don’t overwrite your original template:

Using Microsoft Paint in this way, you can color any white template from us here at Make Breaks (or any other templates you may have) before printing and save having to buy colored cardstock or paper 🙂

Color Tags With MS Paint

This short video shows how I colored our free coloring tags with MS Paint. I colored the pattern, changed the line color and added text:

DIY Folded Paper Wreath with Free Template Tutorial

Make your own DIY paper wreath using our free template! This striking paper wreath is created from a series of polygon models which are adhered together to form a wreath shape. We created the wreath using two colors, red and green for festive celebrations. However, create the wreath in different colors for different occasions or to match your home decor.

You will see in the image below how the polygon five sided shapes are adhered together to form the wreath shapes.

This wreath is simple to make, although allow some time for the cutting and folding of the shapes.

How to Make a DIY Paper Wreath

You will need:

  • Template (find the templates HERE)
  • Cardstock or heavyweight paper
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Adhesive (I like glue sticks, however normal white glue or wood glue will work well too)
  • Metal ruler or straight edge
  • Bone folder (you will use this for scoring the paper or cardstock and this will help to give you crisp edges to your folds)

Instructions

Tip: Try creating one of the pentagon shapes from scrap paper first to familiarize yourself with the technique:

1/ Download and print the template. You will require 10 of the finished pentagon shapes.

2/ Cut out the shapes, using a craft knife or scissors. You will see numbers on the edges of the template which indicate which flaps are joined, however, this is pretty self-explanatory.

3/ Score along the dotted fold lines using the bone folder and metal ruler. If you are not familiar with scoring, we do this to prepare the paper or cardstock for folding. This means using a bone folder (or blunt knife) and carefully drawing this down the side of the ruler along the fold line. This breaks the fibers in the paper and will make it much easier to fold a straight line.

Score along all the fold lines:

4/ Start adhering the edges together to form the pentagon shape:

6/ When you have finished the pentagon shapes, place the shapes into a wreath shape and start adhering them together. Each edge is the same size and shape, therefore it does not matter which edges you join on each pentagon, so if one side isn’t quite perfect, rotate the pentagon shape and use this on the glued side to hide it!

When you are finished your wreath should look like this:

Tips for finishing your DIY paper wreath

  • You may want to make a hole in the back of one of the pentagon shapes to hang the wreath from a wall hook, alternatively, try making a loop of ribbon and attaching this between two of the pentagon shapes before adhering them together.
  • Instead of using our red and green templates, try using odds and ends of scrapbook paper or decorative paper to get an eclectic look.
  • If you want to make a bigger or smaller wreath, simply adjust the size on your printer settings.

We hope you enjoy this papercraft project from Make Breaks 🙂
